Know Your Bible

"An unbelieved truth can hurt a man much more than a lie. It takes great courage to back truth unacceptable to our times. There's punishment for it, and it's usually crucifixion." John Steinbeck, East of Eden (1952)

(picture: Reformer Martin Luther, who risked his life to stand up for truth, 500 years ago, and released freedom and salvation throughout the face of the earth)

"Never be afraid of the world's censure, its praise is much more to be dreaded", warned Charles Spurgeon. This fresh "Biggot-hating" culture all over the media, largely pushed by the antichrist, totalitarian regime of the secular left, has almost made bible-believing a sin, even in churches. Not a bad effort, I must say! In some churches we are quicker to label a bible-believer a Pharisee, rather than a saint. Can you discern the times, church?

Relevance is counterfeit holiness and it has been made an idol in large parts of our increasingly fearful, unbelieving (and spiritually proud) western church. We are only ever relevant when we are holy, set apart and thus able to deliver a lost people out of darkness and into His glorious light. In our desperation for cultural relevance instead of holiness, we have clad our meeting houses in enormous television screens and coffee machines and have ended up with, in many cases, a lukewarm sea of distracted, "spiritual teenagers at a pop concert", hardly able to suckle the milk of the word.

Instead we are called to be a hothouse of salvation, healing and deliverance jam packed full of radical nation-changers desperate for more quality meat from the pulpit, fire from heaven, half-nights of prayer and mass excursions to the perishing streets. We must face facts: large parts of the wider western church are anaemic, flimsy and asleep. I'm not against technology, nor decent coffee, may all things good serve the mandate of heaven, but I am against the flaccid, seeker sensitive church model that has beguiled, muzzled and shackled a cowardly church, seduced the Bride away from first-love freedom and destroyed her trust in the power of boldly proclaiming the simple gospel alone to save humanity.

I realise these are strong words. What I am not saying is that there aren't truly awesome things happening in the kingdom right now. But I am unapologetically calling out mixture, compromise and calling us higher for such a time as this. Deep darkness is covering the earth and it is time for His Body to arise and shine like never before. Where are the heroic Stephens, proclaiming an uncut gospel in front of their truth-hating executioners? Where are the Peters and Pauls, the Latimers and Ridleys of our day? Where is our jealousy and zeal for His name? Is our God holy or not?

A popular one these days is “It’s not the Father, Son and Holy Bible.” Well, it’s not far off. If you love the Holy Spirit, you’ll honour His extensive letter to us. The Bible is God’s word, utterly inspired by the Spirit of God. Granted, you can know the Bible without knowing God but you cannot know God without knowing the Bible. Disagreement with the word of God is agreement with a lie and when you believe a lie you empower the liar. The devil's primary motivation from the foundation of the earth has been to make us doubt God's word - "Did God really say...?" (Gen 3:1 NLT) His cunning and wickedness hasn't changed. And neither has God's word, nor will it ever. (Mal 3:6, Matt 5:18)

The church needs to learn to call out heresy again for the glory of God's name, for the protection of the flock and for the removal of false prophets (Matt 7:15). Sacrificing the absolute truths of God on the altars of human reasoning and political correctness is grave sin, demonic in nature (1 Tim 4:1, Matt 4:9-10, 2 Tim 4:4) and very foolish and destructive (John 10:10). You make yourself the devil’s pawn (he is the Father of lies) and build your house on the sand. When storms and trouble comes, you are going down. Period. Build your house on the rock, be sanctified by the truth, which is the word of God, work out your salvation with fear and trembling. Make sure you aren’t being cooked to death slowly. Get out of the pot of boiling frogs, fast. The church in this nation needs to repent and cry out for a fresh love and holy reverence for the infallible word of Almighty God.

"But on this one I will look:
On him who is poor and of contrite spirit,
And who trembles at My word." Isa 66:2

If I haven't been hated on as a biggot in a few weeks then it's a mark that I'm probably backsliding, disobeying God and looking to man to meet my love-deficit. But as for me, I adore the bible. As a mark of my adoration and worship of it's Author and my heaven-bent refusal of deception and destruction. I'd be dead without my bibles. I'm a bible-loving, bible-believing, devil-bashing, hell-emptying, truth-heralding, freedom-bringing, scripture junkie - by the grace of God. I'm not ashamed of one clause or point of grammar in one of its beautiful, crisp pages. I want to chew every paragraph and put one in every dining room.

Right now I believe that God is shaking both the heavens and the earth with purpose. In the next season I believe that the shaking and sifting in the earth will separate the wheat from the tares, the heavenly from the man-made. So that those "things which cannot be shaken may remain" (Her 12:25-29). May the mercy of God forbid it, but there will be those tragically led away by the harlot church into deception, spiritual adultery and slavery to sin. But I believe the Bride of Christ will humble herself, seek the face of God and, where needed, repent with godly sorrow of all pride, unbelief and cowardice regarding the handling of the word of God. Once tested, we shall come forth as a burning and shining lamp like never before. I believe that this company of believers are going to see a move of God's Spirit in the church and the nations the like of which has never been seen in all of church history. May it be so.

  2. I am in agreement with so much that you say, but this is where I do have a problem ... you say 'The Bible is God’s word, utterly inspired by the Spirit of God. Granted, you can know the Bible without knowing God but you cannot know God without knowing the Bible. Disagreement with the word of God is agreement with a lie and when you believe a lie you empower the liar. The devil's primary motivation from the foundation of the earth has been to make us doubt God's word'. Disagreement with the word of God is agreement with a lie .... In Genesis we read the story of creation in just six (24 hours) days. This is, if we believe science, and the aging of the world and fossils, impossible. Why the great discrepancy between the Bible story where all that we know was created in six days as verses the incredible age of fossils? The earliest fish fossils are around 500 million years old yet the earliest man is 200-300,000 years ago. God said ‘Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures’ And that was the fifth ‘day’ whilst man does not appear until the fifth day. But how could these be days as we know them? Everything flies in the face of science as we know it.

To further compound the difficulty for me - around a six (twenty four hour) day creation is the following verse in Genesis… ‘And God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be signs to indicate seasons, and days, and years. Let them be lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth.” And it was so. God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. Then God set them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. Then God saw that it was good. So the evening and the morning were the fourth day .

We know that the earth and moon revolves around the sun in its orbit, indeed in twenty four hours we complete one revolution. That is what gives us daylight in the day and darkness and the moon at night. But, according to Genesis, God didn’t actually create the Sun or the Moon until the FOURTH day. Clearly this means that for the first three ‘days’ it would have been impossible for these to be three ‘twenty four’ hour days as we know them … a day, which is illuminated by the Sun and the night, illuminated by the moon. Why? Because the Sun and Moon didn’t yet exist. Therefore the preceding ‘days’ were not, and could not, have been just a twenty four hour day as as we know them.

I looked at the original Hebrew that Genesis was written in.

The Hebrew word ‘Yom’ as we find in Genesis (and elsewhere) has various meanings:

     Period of light
     A day a period of twenty-four hours
 The General term for time
     A Point of time
     A year (in the plural; I Sam 27:7; Ex 13:10, etc.)
 A time period of unspecified length.
 A long span of time

For me, this was like a eureka moment, if I read the creation story using the word ‘Yom’ but instead of translating as twenty four hours we translate to mean a ‘long span of time’, or ‘time period of unspecified length’ then God’s creation could now mean it simply took place over six (6) Yoms - long spans of time, or a time period of unspecified length.

So, if I believe what I have written above, according to you, I am in agreement with a lie and the founder of all lies.

As a Christian , I would welcome your response to my comments.

  3. I'm so thankful for doctors and medics and technology experts. I love science, it's a fascinating servant. Tragically science has been made a Master to many and like all things perverted, today the serpent frequently comes to us in a "white lab coat" building strongholds of rationalism that war against the knowledge of God. "Did God really say...?" (Gen 3:1) I believe that the false god of science, the religion of scientism, is the west's chief enemy of holy scripture. I'm thankful for those scientists with integrity (differentiating between empirical and theoretical science) but eternity will reveal just how grossly, in all our pride and unbelief, western man was deceived.

Science didn't impregnate Mary virgin Mother of Jesus. Science didn't raise my friend Ian from the dead (not to mention Jesus) and science didn't get me born again and filled with the Holy Spirit of God, without question the most powerful and life-changing encounter of all my 41 years, and one I have daily. Physics has a certain amount to say, metaphysics a heck of a lot more and, well, the God of love? There simply could never be enough books written. Did God really say? Yes, He did Satan. "It is written." Take your lies with you into the lake of fire for all eternity, whilst my brothers and sisters and I rob you of miilions of precious souls (not monkeys) you thought you owned.

    1. What on earth does that have to do with my post? You have ignored everything I have bothered to write and instead, posted some unrelated blog. This is hardly helpful, or indeed constructive. My post was as a bible believing Christian who has met some incredible Christian scientists who believe in an earth and creation that is millions of years old and a creation that spans a far greater period than just six days. It was written in an honest way asking for your opinion. Your posted reply didn't even bother to answer a single point.
