Jagger's Sympathy vs Jesus' Discernment

"For we are not ignorant of his wiles and intentions." 2 Cor 2:11

"There is no truth in him. When he speaks a falsehood, he speaks what is natural to him, for he is a liar [himself] and the father of lies and of all that is false." Jesus, John 8:44

“Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one - the gentle slope, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts...Your affectionate uncle, Screwtape.”
― C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters

Mick Jagger wrote "Sympathy for the devil" in 1968. I think it's a great song, particularly enjoyed from my side of the cross. It's a track I have torn up many a dance floor to, you might like to know! Okay, so perhaps the spirit behind it is questionable. One lyric packs particular punch - "So if you meet me, have some courtesy, have some sympathy, and some taste." This is my testimony of 26 years. I met the devil, sympathised with him (though I never would have called it that) and bathed in good taste as long as I could stand it. I tolerated sin, and so was dominated. Then I became Another's fool, thank God.

The Trend-Setter

Charles Baudelaire said, "the finest trick of the devil is to persuade you that he does not exist". Even as a born again Christian, filled with the Holy Spirit, I struggled to believe in a literal devil. That was until I went on a mission trip to India and began to see demon spirits manifest with blood-curdling supernatural power. Thank God that over the past ten years I have since been able to expel demonic spirits from literally hundreds of tormented souls in the name of Jesus. The devil is very real. But he never stumbles about with a pitchfork and horns. He glides with debonair panache, sounding sophisticated, looking beautiful. He comes disguised as an angel of light (2 Cor 11:14) and his chief purpose is simply to whisper to us and distract us, deceive us and rob us from our salvation and destiny in God.

Satan can't create, he can only influence and invite partnership and agreement. The devil sows very subtle, convincing, deeply attractive and tasteful lies about who God is and who God isn't (false religion and world view), the state of the world (he definitely doesn't preach that it's under judgement), the nature of sin ("tolerate it and applaud it"), who we are (accidental tourists, jumped-up monkeys) and to where we are all destined (six feet under or "heaven"... hopefully?). His role is to woo us into a doctrine, a culture rooted in fear and pride, a self-sufficient lifestyle that is devoid of an absolute need for God and man's chief end, which is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

Human Reasoning vs. The Truth

By saving and stunning contrast, God through Christ crucified and raised from the dead invites us not into religion, but blissful and eternally fruitful relationship with Him, for which we were all made and without which we are lost, restless and spiritually dead. Truth, in Jesus alone, sets us free. Abundant life then comes not by dry ritual and rules, but by the gracious voice of the Father (truth), His goodness and the everlasting freedom of the Spirit of God within us - a new creation reality.

The devil's evils worked through man will always, fully formed, end up overtly destructive, thieving and murderous (John 10:10). But they never start this way. Evil always begins with the seed of attractive suggestion - "the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life" (1 John 2:16). Satan's whispers are insidious, beguiling ... and perhaps most powerfully, they can "make perfect sense". They are lies nonetheless. Saint Bernard of Clairvaux wrote (c. 1150), "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." In the last century, the rise of Communism was responsible for 94 million deaths, the rise of Nazism contributed to 80 million deaths - both movements came through the proclamations of false prophets of light and hope, gratefully received by the populous at the time.

Vital to note is that the only time Jesus rebuked one of His disciples for 'channeling' Satan himself was when Peter argued that Jesus shouldn't go to the cross and die for mankind (Matt 16:13-23). Chilling is the fact that Peter had just been used by heaven to declare Jesus as the Christ, perhaps the single most important prophetic word the earth had yet witnessed. Only minutes later, in an act which many of us might deem harmless and probably sympathise with, Peter becomes an "offence" to Jesus, choosing to be mindful of "the things of man" alone. Bill Johnson puts it this way - "Human reasoning without Christ at the centre is demonic in nature." I will take this thought a step further: reason, education, politics, the lot, without Christ made central and glorified invites the demonic realm.

Education vs. Understanding

"For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the despotisms, against the powers, against [the master spirits who are] the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere." Eph 6:12

"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." Romans 12:2

"Train up a child in the way he should go,
And when he is old he will not depart from it."
Poverbs 22:6

Most of the trouble today is caused by educated fools. You can be educated and totally in the dark. I was educated at Eton and got a First class honours degree from university but was lost in darkness, bound by sin and on the broad road to destruction. Education does not bring light. “The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.” (Ps 119:130) We must return to a love and reverence for the word of God in scripture to bring illumination, understanding and wisdom. Particularly today, whatever the worldly reputation of the school, be very careful what mindsets you let your children sit under. For there is great darkness being espoused and we shall all give account before God at the judgement seat of Christ.

The greatest and most important thing you can teach your children, any person, is that they will one Day stand before God and give account for their lives.

Scientism Exposed

I'm so thankful for doctors and medics and technology experts. I love science, it's a fascinating servant. However, tragically science has been made a Master to many and like all things perverted, today the serpent frequently comes to us in a "white lab coat" building strongholds of rationalism that war against the knowledge of God. "Did God really say...?" (Gen 3:1)

For the discerning, you only need to watch one episode of Attenborough's "Blue Planet II" and discover that the antichrist agenda of a godless earth with no Creator is subtly woven into the narrative, complete with the gentle, familiar, avuncular voice of evolutionist/quasi-atheist, Attenborough. Throw into the mix some technologically stunning shots of beautiful fish and you have a heady cocktail. Don't mishear me, I think excellent nature documentary is a wonderful blessing. It would be great if God were glorified in the narration but I don't expect that. What I object to is the release of deadly yeast, human reasoning without Christ at the centre, set to poison the undiscerning minds of millions. We should not be surprised when people behave like the animals they are repeatedly told and taught that they are further down the line.

I believe that the false god of science, the religion of scientism (theology dressed up as science), is the west's chief enemy of holy scripture right now. I'm thankful for those scientists with integrity (differentiating between empirical and theoretical science) but eternity will reveal just how grossly, in all our pride and unbelief, western man was deceived.

Science didn't impregnate Mary virgin Mother of Jesus. Science didn't raise my friend Ian McCormack from the dead (not to mention Jesus) and science didn't get me born again and filled with the Holy Spirit of God, without question the most powerful and life-changing encounter of all my 41 years, and one I have multiple times daily. Physics has a certain amount to say, metaphysics a heck of a lot more and, well, the God of love? There simply could never be enough books written.

Discerning Devil-Crushers

“The world can no longer be left to mere diplomats, politicians, and business leaders. They have done the best they could, no doubt. But this is an age for spiritual heroes - a time for men and women to be heroic in their faith and in spiritual character and power. The greatest danger to the Christian church today is that of pitching its message too low.” ― Dallas Willard

Even in the church, we have been sympathetic to the devil indeed, tasteful and courteous, tolerant and dominated, seduced and enslaved, undiscerning and owned. As a result, in many of areas of society (a nation's destiny is steered by the gatekeeper that is His church) we are reaping what we have sown through our ignorance and in some cases complicit silence. In Nazi Germany Dietrich Bonhoeffer said this - “Not to Speak Is to Speak. Not to Act is to Act.” But the tail is becoming the head again! Did God really say? Yes, He did Devil. "It is written." Our sympathy and courtesy is terminated. Our discernment and understanding is back on. The truth is sanctifying us (John 17:17). We are being given eyes to see again. The church is waking up. Her fire, zeal for righteousness and voice is coming back. Devil - Take your lies with you into the lake of fire for all eternity, whilst my brothers and sisters and I rob you of millions of precious souls (not apes) you thought you owned.
